IDP acquires British Council’s IELTS in India.

The British Council has announced that IDP will be recipient of its IELTS business in India, with IDP paying £130 million on a debt and cash free basis.

Following the sale, IDP will be delivering all tests in India, with British Council employees working on IELTS in India becoming part of the IDP team.

The British Council has reiterated its commitment to its broader services in India, emphasising that IDP already delivers high quality IELTS and will continue to do so, with the British Council trusting that their former programme will be run to IDP’s high standards.

The sale comes after a period of financial difficulties for the British Council, which was forced to shut down the majority of its language schools due to the pandemic. 44 of its 47 English language schools, and 195 of its 223 language test centres being shut down, which cut off the main source of its income.
